Meandering Pathways

Seamlessly merging two contradicting networks of walkways and open spaces, EB/Architects redesign proposal aims to transform the unwelcoming, obsolete central square of Gerakas, to a transitional urban park that will draw visitors into a fully immersive landscape experience.

Redesign of the Central Square of Gerakas

'Macedonia’s Square' in the Municipality of Gerakas, is located in the commercial and administrational center of the historical suburb, 12 km northeast of Athens.

EB/Architects’ redesign proposal was based on the composition of two intersecting circulation, social gathering and leisure, open space networks.

The primary network consists of a straight, linear walkway set parallel to the longest axis of the square, interrupted by 2 orthogonal inner squares:

The first at the center of the landscaped area includes a reflecting pool, and rows of tables with seating that encourages informal social events of a private, smaller scale, such as outdoor parties, table gaming, casual dining etc.

The second orthogonal square is placed to the eastern end, closer to the town, and is an open, free of obstacles, space with permanent concrete seats on two sides, aimed for public events, open-air exhibition or performances, public speeches, etc.

Crossing this main, straight lined system of walkways and open spaces, a meandering ribbon-like path, provides accessibility with its lack of steps, and gives an elegant impression with its simplistic design.

These garden type paths, form complete loops, and wind around tree lines to create protected outdoor 'rooms' with curved seating, aimed for isolation and tranquility for visitors.
