Competition Entry for an Educational & Administration Complex in the Medical School of Ioannina

Ioannina Medical School is one of the seven medical schools in Greece. It has an increasing number of faculty members aiming to serve its missions in education, clinical practice and research.

EB/Architects were assigned by BETAPLAN SA to prepare the Architectural and Sustainability design package for a closed competition organized by the University, regarding a new facility to accommodate the five sections of the Clinical Specialties Department of the School.

According to the proposed solution the complex would be formulated by the composition of two primary volumes:

The first one would have the shape of a longitudinal curved wing where the administration departments will be accommodated, while the second one, provisioned for the educational activities was designed as a more austere volume in the shape of an orthogonal angle. In the space between these two volumes, where the 'center of gravity' of the composition is, a large outdoor area acts as the meeting point for students, professors and visitors, as well as the entrance yard to the main buildings.

A fourth, important element, was introduced in the form of steel corridor-bridges and external staircases which connect the two primary volumes and the central yard providing also an intersecting axis towards other facilities of the University Campus.
